Winter World in a Tent fair with stalls, world food + performances – Dover

Welcome to Winter World in a Tent fair in Dover! Join us on Sat Nov 23rd at St Mary’s Parish Centre for a celebration of diverse communities, cultures, landscapes and history of Dover. It will be an evening filled with stalls, world food, and performances. Explore unique crafts and gifts at the stalls, indulge in delicious international cuisine, and enjoy live entertainment through the night. It’s the perfect way to kick off the festive season with family and friends. There will be performances by the Orchestra from Everywhere made up of refugee musicians, singers and musicians performing a new arrangement of the well-known “White Cliffs of Dover” song with additional verses, some African drumming, Bollywood and Indian dancing for people to join in with, a display of Nepalese culture, heritage with dancing, Nepalese food + an exhibition by the Maison Dieu’s engagement team to celebrate the wonderful old Town hall building and its history. Hear stories of refugees and pilgrims welcomed through its doors over 800 years. Find out about the painstaking work to restore this spectacular neo-gothic building which re-opens next spring and how to get involved in its exciting 2025 programme. Make a big festive badge to celebrate Dover’s diverse communities, beautiful landscapes or rich history!

There will also be activities laid on by Kent AONB’s own Geoanimator on the landscapes around Dover – a wonderful opportunity for kids to meet the Kent AONB team !

Finally for the first time in Dover – a screening of the popular Nepalese film “Sugup” . Don’t miss out on this – it’s from 2.30-4.30pm at Dover Community Cinema. Entrance via Dover Museum, Market Square, Dover, CT16 1PH with a pre-screen talk at 1.30pm. After the screening join us at the fair from 5pm and tell us what you thought about the film over a cup of tea or coffee.

Doors open at 5.30pm for the fair. Performances from 6.30pm.

There will be a bar with mulled wine, beer and soft drinks.

Nepalese Film screening – 2.30- 4.30pm at Dover Community Cinema, entrance via Dover Museum. Pre-screening talk 1.30pm. Post screening discussion 5pm at the fair. World in a Garden Tenterden – Latin Fiesta

Latin Fiesta is a lively and entertaining Latin band, playing popular modern salsa, cumbia, Pop-Latin and merengue dance hits. They are based in London, but have travelled all over the world, from Tunisia to Dubai!Latin Fiesta was started over 25 years ago, by Colombian multi-instrumentalist Jairo, and with the addition of charismatic Spanish singer Lola, they rapidly grew in fame and have been playing frequently at the UK’s top dance venues and festivals and at many private/corporate/wedding party events, internationally.

They are also the only band to have been invited back every year to perform at the West Dean Chilli Fiesta festival, for the entire weekend.

They are a charming group of authentic Latino musicians, and engage actively with the audience, are happy to demonstrate Latin dance moves, and their enthusiasm is infectious! Be prepared to “put on your red shoes and dance” and learn some salsa!

There will also be some specially prepared world cuisine. Food will be available during the event and will need to be booked in advance. Please book in advance for the drumming workshop.

Bring your own picnic chairs and mats. Toilets are available to use and there is disabled access.

Performances may be recorded for live streaming at a later date.

You are welcome to arrive early for a walk in some of the beautiful AONB countryside around us.

You will need to register and reserve your place before the event. There is limited capacity so please book early to avoid disappointment. Donations are most welcome and can be made after you have registered when we will send you a link.

Suggested donations – £ 7 music, £6 – food. Thank you. Children under 6 are free. Half-price for children between 6 – 12 years.

Uplifting South African songs and dances + African drumming workshop

Uzambezi delivers an exciting and memorable performance of stirring and catchy South African songs with their dancing.

U’zambezi animate their songs with traditional dancing, ululation and African drumming. They offered a passion-fuelled recital in an outdoor setting with gum-boot dancing, traditional song and hip hop – to name a few of their acts. The group has played for dignitaries such as Nelson Mandela and Queen Elizabeth II. They have also contributed to events such as the Global Bandstand, where they were hailed as, ‘the equivalent of Ladysmith Black Mambazo’ (Global Bandstand Review).

Travelling to the festival:

By foot: If you are coming from Ashford town centre please either walk over the footbridge next to Picture House on Elwick Road and cross the road and follow the path into Victoria park. The festival is next to the fountain.

By car: If you are travelling by car you would need to park on one of the residential roads around the park or in the Bowling Club’s car park.

By train: The closest train station is Ashford International and it is a 10 min walk from there down past Aldi and its on the opposite side of the road to Aldi. There is a footpath going into Victora Park to the fountain end of the park

By bus: There are public buses that go into Ashford and into the main station and also down Elwick Road which will bring you into town very close to Victoria Park. Please check the schedule as it varies on Sundays and may be less frequent.

T OILETS – please note the toilet block is closed for refurbishing. There are portaloos available and you can also use toilets in Aldi, and in County Square which are 10 min away if you are walking, and also in the Designer Outlet (if you have a car)
